Monica Orluk, Operation Troop Appreciation
Washington County, PA, - 12-15-2009The Peters Township Indians and the Canon McMillan Big Macs will face off in an exhibition hockey game on Friday night December 18th at 6:00 pm at the Iceoplex at Southpointe in Canonsburg with all proceeds to benefit Operation Troop Appreciation.
The mission of Operation Troop Appreciation (OTA) “To build and sustain the morale of deployed troops, enabling them to complete their missions with the assurance that the American public supports and appreciates their selfless service and daily sacrifices.” OTA is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit that has granted wishes to over 56,000 deployed troop members since July of 2004.
The Indians and Big Macs are long time rivals that, due to Canon McMillan being moved to a larger enrollment classification, have not played competitively for a few years. “These guys grew up playing with and against each other in amateur hockey over the years. Many of them are good friends off the ice and we thought it would be great to get an annual game organized to benefit a worthy charitable cause” said Mike Almasy, President of the Canon McMillan Hockey Club. The teams will be playing for the “Miners Cup” trophy, honoring the important role coal mining has played in the history of Washington County. Tickets will be $5 at the door.
